The Importance Behind Compressor Maintenance
Every year we get multiple calls from people reporting their compressor “died”. While the obvious solution to them is to get a new compressor, often the solution is much simpler and budget-friendly!
All air compressors require some maintenance! However, there are two specific aspects of compressor maintenance that are crucial: rebuilds and air filters.
Kasco Marine Teich-Aire Compressors (and most other air compressors) are due for a rebuild every 18 months. Kits are available to make rebuild simple. A video to walk you through the rebuild is coming soon!

If properly maintained, your compressor can easily last up to 10 years. Rebuilds are incredibly crucial to ensure your compressor does not fail, particularly in the winter. If your compressor fails during the winter, your fish can’t survive without oxygen. Many people opt to have a back-up compressor handy to swap out in case of a compressor failure.
Have a different compressor? It will still require maintenance! Contact us to see if we have a rebuild kit for your compressor in stock.
Air filters are the other aspect of maintenance that must be followed. Air filters must be replaced (or at the minimum cleaned) on a monthly basis.
Some Troubleshooting
Some common issues are highlighted below. Having any other difficulties with your compressor? Give us a call at 1-855-414-7663
Compressor is making a “popping sound”
- Cause: Air is being blocked somewhere; pressure release valve is having to release air
- Solution: unblock airline, compressor may need rebuild
Compressor is not working
- May need rebuild
- NOTE if bearings are seized, compressor can not be repaired
Compressor sounds like it’s working hard/struggling
- Replace (or at minimum clean) the air filter
- Check to see if rebuild is needed
- Clean compressor housing and ensure all vents and fans are clear of debris
- Ensure compressor is not overheating
Any Unusual Sounds: We recommend the following for any unusual sounds:
- Replace (or at minimum clean) the air filter
- Check to see if rebuild is needed
- Clean compressor housing and ensure all vents and fans are clear of debris
- Ensure compressor is not overheating
Not as much air flow/ restricted airflow
- This may be caused by a clogged air filter
- Check to see if air filter is dirty and due for a change
- This may be because the compressor is due for a rebuild as parts have experienced normal wear and tear
